Environmental Change
Starts With You
Re-think, Recycle, Re-use for a GREENER WORLD
One of the biggest issues facing my generation and those to come after are the effects of global warming and other environmental issues. I came up with Manhasset Greenwise Kids for my Girl Scout Gold Award project. For my project I taught young children at the Manhasset/ Great Neck EOC Smmer Camp about different environmental issues. The topics we covered included recycling, sustainability of resources, aquifer pollution, ocean pollution, global warming, and compositing. The goal of my project was to educate and inspire young children to make simple environmental choices in their lives that will have a positive impact on our planet. The reason I created this project was to show that there are so many ways for everyone to help this planet. Our environment is in a dire state right now, and every effort counts. My hope is that many age groups can learn from this website how to preserve and protect our precious environment.
Lesson Plans
For my project I taught the children about five different environmental problems that the planet is facing using age appropriate lessons and activities. These lesson plans ranged from local issues, like aquifer pollution, to global issues such as global warming. These plans highlight some of the components that factor into these problems, and the effects that they have on our planet. Also they contain easy ways that we can all be more green.
Activities/ Town Initiatives
One way to get kids involved with the environment is by having them do an imaginative interactive game/ activity that can illustrate and motivate them to make a change that can have an impact on their world. The activities I chose for the kids were meant to plant that seed of change.
Another way to have children get involved in their environment is to start with their own town. The Town of North Hempstead has many initiatives that they have instituted through its “How Green is My Town” program, which provides residents with environmental education enabling them to become more environmentally friendly. For my project I implemented one of the Town’s initiatives by donating a composter to the EOC, which will be used to produce organic fertilizer for their organic vegetable garden. Below is a link to the town’s website where all of their initiatives are listed.
